The next morning we took the ferry to Alcatraz. This was really well run – the interesting audio commentary was narrated by ex-guards and convicts, but to be honest I spent most of my time figuring out locations from the movie The Rock.
In the afternoon we drove to a small town called Patterson via a couple of wine tastings. The wines were all pretty dire, but they made a decent Pecan and Blue Cheese dip.
Most people thought Patterson was a waste of time as there was nothing there but a hotel, a garage and 8 or 9 fast food outlets. I secretly didn’t mind – there’s worse ways to spend an evening than exploring 8 or 9 fast food menus.
