Table Mountain and Wine Tasting – Cape Town, South Africa

Table Mountain Cable Car

Woke up to the news that it was too windy to go up Table Mountain, but drove there anyway for a closer look. The mountain is frequently covered by a thin layer of cloud, called the Tablecloth, which makes it quite dangerous due to reduced visibility.

As we arrived they announced that the wind had died down and the Aerial Cableway was reopening, so we got to walk around the summit plateau and some great views of Cape Town spread out below.

Two of the group decided to hike down which took a couple of hours, but the rest of us had learnt from the previous day and went to the restaurant before taking the cable car back down the mountain.

In the afternoon we boarded the truck and drove to Stellenbosch. On the way we stopped at the Fairview vineyard, famous for it’s goats and pun wine names, such as Goats do Roam, Bored Doe and Goat Door. For just £5 you could taste 8 wines and 5 cheeses. This didn’t take very long, but they seemed keen to keep us sampling as the more we drank the more full size bottles we bought. Having tasted 13 wines and rather a lot of the same 6 cheeses we went for our first nights camping.

The campsite was in a pine forest and had a decent swimming pool, which I jumped in before remembering I was supposed to stay out of the water for at least a month after my eye operation. Fortunately I could no longer see just how dirty the water was.

Went out for dinner that evening in a lovely open air restaurant, but got paranoid about the size of the spider hanging from the canopy just above me.
