This was a special day – we’d arrived at Chichén Itzá on the spring equinox. Thousands of locals and tourists alike had come so see the setting sun cast a shadow over the side of the 2000 year old Temple of Kukulcan, the stepped pyramid creating a shimmering image of the serpent god on the side of the stairs.
Following the light show we headed via the rather cosmopolitan Playa del Carmen, before ending up back in Cancun.
Finally getting a chance to see Cancún after the influx of visitors during Spring Break it was a disappointingly American feeling place, with the usual Starbucks and Hard Rock Café.
The flight home was far more enjoyable, getting bumped up from Economy to First Class following an eight-hour delay at Miami due to bad weather. During the flight the lady opposite me was getting angry that they’d run out of the beef option and shouted “I’ve paid over $3000 for this flight – I’d expect there to be a decent menu on board.” After calming the lady down the attendant turned to me and asked what my choice was. I shrugged and replied “I paid less than $400, I’ve have whatever’s left thanks” and was treated like a king for the rest of the journey whilst the lady opposite just scowled.
