Arrived in Mumbai at 4am and got to the hotel about 6.10am. The hotel room was fine but seemed to have an awful lot of switches on the wall – 10 unmarked switches for each of the various lights, two for the ceiling fan and two random others. In an effort to get some sleep I tried to turn off all the lights but they kept going on and off and one of the switches made the bathroom wall buzz…
A few minutes later a chap knocked on the door and asked how he could help. He turned all the lights off and left, whilst I nipped to the bathroom and played with the buzzing switch.
A few minutes later the same chap knocked on the door and asked how he could help. I said I was fine thanks and went to bed, but couldn’t sleep so played a tune with the buzzy switch some more.
A few minutes later the same chap knocked on the door and asked how he could help. I said I was fine thanks and he explained that the buzzing on the bathroom wall was the room service bell being rung at the end of the corridor and I’d been ringing it repeatedly for the last half hour. “Whoops, sorry”, followed by him wobbling his head in the Indian fashion.
The next morning (well 90 minutes later) it was 8am and I needed the loo so stared in desperation at the array of switches on the wall trying to find the bathroom light, gave up and pressed them all.
A few minutes later the same chap knocked on the door and asked how he could help. I said I was fine thanks.
