A long drive was broken up by a pleasant visit to the Agua Caliente waterfalls on the Rio Dulce – hot springs where we could have a decent swim and shower.
The all encompassing warmth soon disappeared when we boarded a boat over Lago de Izabal (Guatemala’s largest lake) to our stop for the night – a jungle cabin on a small island inhabited solely by mosquitoes. Only comfort for the night was a large pile of chocolate that the Swiss had brought with them.
