Possibly the greatest sunday market on Earth – Kashgar, China

Kashgar Market

Kashgar Market

Every Sunday 50,000 people gather in the westernmost town in China for the Kashgar animal market, the only place to buy and sell goods in an area the size of Europe.

Unaware of the sheer scale of the event we blindly wandered in and got lost amongst the cows, sheep, hairdressers, furs, tailors and food stalls. Camels screamed as they got winched into trucks and sheep bleated as they got docked with rusty shears.

Blissfully the market was entirely free of tourist tat – it would have been easier to buy a horse than a motorbike and little ceramic knick-knacks were nowhere to be seen.

Aside from the market the rest of the town was also pretty special – we were able to wander the car free streets and talk to the locals without any fear or pressure.
