Animals! – Xaxanaka, Botswana

Leopard Botswana

Unpacked the truck and moved all our gear to 4×4’s for our first game drive – 2 nights in the Moremi Game Reserve.

Given the time of year we were very lucky with the 2 hour drive into the improbably named Xaxanaka – we saw giraffe, impala, zebra, elephants, warthogs and baboons. Arriving at the wild camp we found it was currently occupied by an elephant, but thankfully it got bored of people taking pictures of it and wandered off.

In the evening we went on a game drive and were lucky enough to find a leopard with it’s fresh kill. As we edged closer we got within 10 feet of it. This seemed like an appropriate time to drop my sunglasses out the window, but our top driver Dave rescued them – Never quite got him to respond to: “Alright Dave?” with “Alright Trig”.

Back at the campsite I had a restless night listening to hippos wandering about nearby and less concerned people snoring even closer.

A morning drive was less successful, but we did see some lion tracks on the way to the jetty. We took a boat out for a long cruise in the sun, but I decided to sit on the roof, which worried the driver a bit that the boat would topple over and resulted in some quite delirious day dreams, probably from the sun stroke. Saw lots of birds and finally a hippopotamus.
