Everyone with a blue passport (the Aussies, Kiwis and Americans) had to visit the Georgian embassy to get a visa for the next country, but fortunately the Brits don’t have to so I get to spend the day wandering around town. Baku is a British (BP) and American (Exxon) oil town so has a far wider range of shops and restaurants than you might expect in the middle of nowhere and I got the chance to pick up some much needed new clothes and toiletries.
We had dinner in an awful restaurant with local live music and then head off to the Irish pub, which has a big sign outside proclaiming ‘Guinness on draught’. Once inside we find nothing but Russian beer and Scottish oil workers.
