On our way back through the Mayan highlands towards Mexico we stopped at an innocuous looking muddy drive which took us up to Agua Azul, a stunning series of waterfalls and lakes containing clear blue water. The day was particularly hot and the opportunity to splash about couldn’t be missed.
A little further down the road we came upon the huge cascade of Misol-Ha, a high waterfall dropping into a seemingly bottomless lake.
An early start the next day took us to Palenque, a wide ranging series of pyramids built in the middle of the jungle over 1300 years ago. This was great and with a little effort it was quite possible to get away from the hundreds of tourists and find yourselves deep in the jungle looking at smaller, unrestored ruins, still full of local wildlife.
