Fire and Ice – Reykjavik, Iceland

Five day trip to , if you count landing at 11.55pm as a day. The first proper day we jumped in a Super-Jeep and trolled around the thermal vents used to heat the island and generate all their power. Unfortunately it was unseasonably warm so turned into Greenland as all the snow rapidly disappeared. Missed out on the skidooing, by the various resulting waterfalls all over the hills were spectacular. We ended the day in a tiny bar selling nothing but crayfish tails in garlic, and copius amounts of beer.

The second day we drove to both a volcano and a glacier, both very impressive

The third day was spent at geysers and another glacier. That evening we had a very long and expensive night out in Reykjavik, starting at a restaurant where I got to eat seal flippers (looked like a rubber glove), whale (very strong taste of iron) and puffin (grated on top of the whale, of course).

The third day we spent the morning looking round Reykjavik before heading back to the airport via the Blue Lagoon thermal spa, which rapidly became on of my favourite places. The water is heated from underground to 60-70 degrees, whilst the air is at -2C. Combined with a massage and a few cocktails it was very relaxing.
